American BioCarbon’s biochar is now certified carbon removal tool

EN

American BioCarbon, a manufacturer of bio-energy products made from sugarcane bagasse, has have its biochar successfully verified by Puro.earth as a carbon removal tool.

Under an agreement with Puro.earth, American BioCarbon is now allowed to sell digital tradable assets called CO 2 Removal Certificates (CORCs) in the carbon markets. It represents a major milestone to American BioCarbon for it aims to become the largest capacity biochar producer in the U.S.

Puro.earth is the world’s first B2B marketplace, standard and registry for carbon removal. The Puro.earth certification proved that American BioCarbon’s biochar is truly carbon net-negative and meet Puro Standard’s methodology requirements including environmental safeguards.

American BioCarbon's production facility and related data were inspected by third-party auditors. The lifespan of the product, scientific measurement and quantification of the removed CO2, and its residence time in storage are all considered. Following that, CORCs are granted for each metric ton of CO2 extracted and stored based on the verified amount of additional carbon absorbed in the biochar.

"We are pleased with the results of the Puro.earth audit, which confirm that American BioCarbon’s biochar is an effective carbon removal solution,” said Ned Dwyer, CEO of American BioCarbon. “We are proud to utilize an agricultural waste product, which otherwise creates a significant environmental liability, and transform it into a valuable climate-positive Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) commodity."

The bagasse-made biochar produced by American BioCarbon capture carbon in a secure chemical structure, preventing carbon from releasing back into the atmosphere through bagasse decomposition or burn-offs.

Biochar is up to 100 times more stable in soil than the material from which it was made, and a significant portion of its organic carbon will stay in the soil for centuries to millennia. Agricultural and environmental advantages of biochar include nutrient retention, enhanced aeration, and improved water holding capacity.
