Taiwan companies shine in 2024 Dow Jones Sustainability Index

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) by S&P Global, which annually adjusts its components based on companies' ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) performance, is considered the "Oscars of Sustainability." The full list for 2024 was released on the evening of Dec. 23, Taiwan time.

A total of 42 Taiwanese companies made it to the DJSI 2024, an increase of seven compared to 2023. Among them, 34 companies were selected for the World Index and 37 for the Emerging Markets Index, both numbers higher than the previous year. A total of 29 companies made it to both indexes.

6 Taiwanese companies new to the List

S&P Global uses the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) to evaluate companies, with only the top 10% performers in sustainability within each industry being included in the index.

This year, 6 Taiwanese companies made their debut on the DJSI, including China Steel, TCC Group, AUO, Wistron, Wistron NeWeb, Far Eastern New Century, Hiwin Technologies, Giant Manufacturing, PharmaEssentia, and EVA Air.

Among them, China Steel, AUO had previously appeared on the list. AUO marking its 14th year on the World Index, earned full marks in 6 key indicators: environmental policy and management, water resource management, policy influence, privacy protection, transparency and reporting, and materiality analysis.

In terms of industry representation in World Index, the banking sector saw the highest number of entries with 9 companies, followed by electronic equipment and components with 7, and semiconductors and equipment with 6.

A notable shift from last year occurred in the electronic equipment and components sector, where Advantech was removed, AUO rejoined after a one-year absence, and Wistron joined to the list in four years.

Taiwanese companies make strides in materials, consumer durables

In the Emerging Markets Index, notable highlights include Giant Manufacturing, which became the first global bicycle industry company to be included.

In the pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and life sciences category, PharmaEssentia was the only Taiwanese company selected, while Oneness Biotech, which was on the list last year, did not retain its spot. In the transportation sector, where EVA Air made its debut while China Airlines not on the list this year while.

Furthermore, Taiwan's traditionally underrepresented materials sector saw a breakthrough, with both TCC Group and China Steel not only making it onto the Emerging Markets Index but also joining the World Index.

TCC Group made history as the first cement company in Greater China and Northeast Asia to be selected, while China Steel made a strong return to the list after a one-year hiatus, ranking first globally in the steel industry.
